Pre-Op Instructions

General Pre-Operative Instructions

  • Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night prior to your surgery. If necessary, you may take approved medications (ie. blood pressure medications) with sips of water only.
  • Wear loose fitting, comfortable clothing. Do NOT wear makeup, oils, or lotions. Remove all jewelry and piercings. Contact lenses and dentures may be removed prior to surgery. Please do not bring any valuables.
  • Plan to have an adult take you home from surgery and stay with you the night after surgery as you will likely need extra assistance. No public transportation home from surgery allowed.
  • Stop NSAIDs (i.e. Ibuprofen, Advil, Aleve) 5 days prior to the operation. Prescribed pain medication is only to be taken after surgery.
  • If you have a personal or family history of blood clots, smoke, or take birth control, please inform us. We may recommend additional measures post-operatively to prevent blood clots.
  • Wash the operative extremity with chlorhexidine wash or wipes for 2 days prior to surgery, as well as the morning of surgery.
  • Do not shave the operative extremity the day of surgery, inform us of any rashes or open wounds.
  • Nutrition: be sure you are eating a balanced diet with plenty of protein. A multi-vitamin may be recommended, or Vitamin D supplementation as directed.
